What is the IP protection of LED screens for?

14 Sep, 2021 | LED screens

When choosing an LED display, IP protection is an important factor. When we look for LED screens for outdoor use, their relevance is even greater, such as on a building facade or monopole on a road.

This nomenclature is also known as the IP protection level and is a reference to IEC 60529, an international standard widely used in the manufacture of electrical and electronic equipment. Manufacturing companies use this nomenclature to learn more about the physical conditions that products can withstand.

IP protection LED screens

If we look at the degree of IP protection of a product, we will know its alphanumeric classification, which refers to the level of protection it enjoys. The goal is to understand this information as soon as possible without consulting other technical data or manufacturers.

The abbreviation in English IP stands for "Ingress Protection" and is located before the digital code that indicates the product in the corresponding protection level. In general terms, the higher the level of protection, the better the protection effect enjoyed by the product or material.

CEI 60529 in IP Protection

Any reference to protection begins with "IP", so this information is easy to find. Followed by two letters, we obtain two numbers, which represent the conditions that the product in question admits.

IP protection LED screens

The first number ranges from 0 to 6, which means that the device protects solid objects and always refers to dust particles. At 0, the product has no protection. Then, in 1, the maximum size of the elements that can inadvertently access the computer is 50 mm. The scale goes up to 6, which means that the device has complete protection against dust and will not penetrate under any circumstances.

The second number in the nomenclature goes from 0 to 9K and refers to the protection of the product against liquids. As we saw in the first number, 0 means that the device lacks protection against liquids and is completely fragile. After 1 test, as the level increases, the dripping gradually increases to verify that the equipment can withstand such conditions. 7 and 8 represent full immersion, and 9K means prevent high temperature water from directing into the product under high pressure.

Importance of IP on your LED screen

In the last two decades, IP protection has always been an important element of the electronic products market. Before this, due to the operating conditions of the equipment, only the industrial sector paid attention to the level of protection of the equipment.

In the special case of advertising LED screens, IP protection is essential to choose the right product.

If you consider installing a screen on a monopole in the open air and it is located on the side of the road and is constantly exposed to rain, sun, wind and finally attracts a lot of dust, the LED screen needs a certain degree of IP protection high or very high, enough to maintain good physical condition.

In less severe cases, such as LED screens installed on the facade of a building. In these outdoor conditions, water and dust are still a problem. However, with an adequate level of IP protection, this problem would be solved.

For example, one of LEDLEMON outdoor LED screen with IP65 protection, means that it has very high protection against dust and very powerful amounts of water.
