LED shop window displays turn your storefront glass into a magnet for attention: a bright screen visible from across the street that catches passers-by and stops them in front of your shop before they walk on. At LEDLEMON we manufacture and install LED screens in shop windows across Spain, and we know what separates one that works from a panel that fades out against the midday glare: enough brightness to be seen behind the glass in full daylight, the right format for the space and content that rotates on its own. In this article we explain how to make the most of it, which sectors benefit most and which technical points to be clear about.
Why an LED screen in the shop window attracts customers
A static shop window competes with dozens of stimuli in the street. An LED shop window display wins that battle for three reasons: it moves (the human eye follows movement), it emits its own light (it shines even when the sun hits the glass full on) and it changes message without you reprinting anything. Where you once had a fixed poster, you now show the week's promotion, the new collection and the opening hours on a loop. And it works around the clock, even with the shop closed, projecting your brand to anyone passing by at night: the result is measured in footfall that turns into visits.
Sectors that gain visibility with a shop window display
Any street-level business benefits, but there are sectors where the return is clearer because their product is bought with the eyes and their customer decides on the pavement:
- Opticians: show frames, brands and prescription-lens promotions in rotation, highlighting the seasonal product without cluttering the physical display.
- Pharmacies: communicate services (blood pressure, dermo-cosmetics, vaccination campaigns) and seasonal health advice. For the exterior sign we also manufacture LED crosses and signs for pharmacies, which complement the shop window screen.
- Estate agents: replace the paper listings stuck to the glass with a digital slideshow of properties featuring photos, price and floor area, updated in seconds.
- Travel agencies: project destinations, last-minute deals and video of the places, which sells far more than a leaflet in the window.
- Advertising and marketing agencies: use their own shop window as a living demonstration of what they offer.
- Retail and fashion: play seasonal catalogues to capture passers-by in high-traffic areas.
El Ganso in Madrid: a fashion shop window with an LED screen
A real example is the shop window of El Ganso in Madrid. The Spanish fashion brand trusted LEDLEMON for the digital renovation of its flagship shop window, and we fitted a P2.6 indoor LED screen measuring 1 metre wide by 2 metres high in vertical format, built into the decor of the space.
Two decisions shaped the result. First, the brightness optimised for shop windows exposed to daylight: the screen reads clearly despite the glare on the glass. Second, the vertical format: it makes the most of the shop window's height and leaves the physical product in view. With it, El Ganso plays seasonal catalogues in one of the busiest shopping areas in Madrid. In hospitality we apply the same retail-ambience logic: at the Bora Bora restaurant in Málaga we installed a large-format 3×1.5 m indoor LED screen to set the mood of the venue and draw attention from outside.
Brightness: the key to being seen behind the glass in full daylight
It is the mistake we see most often: installing an ordinary indoor screen behind glass facing the sun. In direct daylight, that screen fades out against the glare and cannot be read. An LED shop window display needs high brightness —measured in nits— capable of overpowering the ambient light and the reflection on the glass. The rule is simple: the more sunlight the shop window receives, the more brightness is needed, and one on a shaded street does not demand the same as one facing the midday sun. Before quoting, we check orientation, hours of sun and glare on the glass to size the brightness exactly right, so you neither overpay nor fall short when most people are passing by.
Vertical format, size and resolution to suit your shop window
The shop window dictates the format. Most are tall, narrow spaces, so the vertical format usually fits best: it makes the most of the height, is visible from a distance and leaves room for the product on display. Every premises is different, which is why we manufacture the screen custom-made to the space rather than forcing a catalogue size.
For resolution, the reference is the distance from which the passer-by looks. In a shop window the audience is very close —a couple of steps from the glass— so a fine pixel pitch is advisable to keep the image sharp at close range:
- Street-level shop windows, very close audience: our high-definition P2.6 screen keeps the image clean at a few metres, with no visible dot. It is the one we fit in retail and fashion, as at El Ganso.
- Large shop windows or those also seen from a distance: the pixel pitch can be increased to cover more surface with the same budget, checking that the image remains comfortable to read at close range.
Rotating, programmable content, without depending on anyone
A shop window screen only pays off if the content changes. That is why we set them up ready to show rotating, programmable content: playlists of images and video that follow one another on their own, with the option to schedule by time slot —morning offers, a different piece in the afternoon, the brand on a loop when the shop is closed—. And without depending on a technician for every change: updating the promotion, adding the new collection or announcing the holiday is as easy as changing a file, so the shop window speaks for you with no extra work.
