When searching for a large-format digital solution for a storefront, commercial interior or façade, it's common to hesitate between LED technology and LCD technology. Both have their advantages, but they work very differently and adapt to very different use profiles. In this article we analyze the key points of each so you can make an informed choice.

The fundamental difference: how they generate the image

Although modern LCD monitors already use LED diodes as backlighting—hence the occasional confusion—the technical difference is essential:

  • In an LCD screen, white light from the backlight passes through liquid crystals and color filters to form the image. The crystals act as light passage valves.
  • In a direct-view LED screen, each pixel is its own light source: a group of RGB diodes that emit colors directly, without intermediate filters or crystals.

This difference in origin has important consequences for brightness, format and scalability.

Advantages of LCD screens

Professional LCD monitors offer outstanding sharpness at short distances—under 2 meters—and very precise color fidelity thanks to pixel density. They are the most common option for digital signage in small spaces, digital menus in restaurants, and information screens in reception areas.

Their main limitation for large format appears when you want to create large screens: it is necessary to stack several panels (Video Wall), which generates visible dividing frames that interrupt the image. Additionally, LCD brightness rarely exceeds 1,500 nits, making them insufficient for outdoor use or storefronts with direct sunlight.

Advantages of direct-view LED screens

Modular LED screens eliminate the LCD problems for large format:

  • No frames: the cabinets assemble perfectly and continuously, creating a single surface of any size and shape.
  • Much higher brightness: outdoor models reach up to 10,000 nits, competitive even under direct sun (a home television emits around 400 nits).
  • Unlimited scalability: from 0.5 m² to hundreds of square meters, with the Pixel Pitch chosen custom according to viewing distance.
  • Creative formats: curved, transparent, flexible, cylindrical or any geometry that space demands.
  • Long service life: 100,000 hours compared to the typical 50,000–70,000 of a professional LCD.

When to choose each technology?

Choose LCD screen when

  • The space is limited and the audience will be less than 2 meters away.
  • You need a standard-size screen (up to 75–85 inches) for information signage or digital menu.
  • Budget is tight and you don't require large format.

Choose LED screen when

  • You need a surface of more than 1.5–2 m² without dividing frames.
  • The installation is exposed to direct sunlight or the storefront has high ambient lighting.
  • You want a custom format, curved or with special geometry.
  • You're seeking maximum visual impact and an investment that lasts more than a decade.
